A nurse removes a bedpan from underneath a patients...
A nurse removes a bedpan from underneath a patients bed at the temporary care unit and operating room for women suffering from fistula, in Bunia, Ituri, DR Congo, on Saturday, July 15, 2006. Fistula is a childbirth or rape injury that leaves women with incontinence, often isolated and ashamed. The women who receive the free fistula operations given at the center are then given the opportunity to re-integrate themselves into society and re-join their families, as they are often banned form their tribes when they have this injury. The hospital, which holds this care center, is run by the NGO Medair, which provides the doctors and medicine for the care of the women. Moreover, Dr. Christine insists on treating women of all ethnic groups, even from enemy tribes. She believes that this creates reconciliation and peace between the women.
